Well, the Autism Walk has been postponed due to the fires in the San Diego area. I guess they voted to play it safe and don't want to reschedule during the holiday season. Bummer! We are disappointed not to have the fun of getting together tomorrow.
All the same, it has been an enormous encouragement to hear from so many of you and to have met the financial goal we set. Thank you! I am blown away by the gestures of support that have come in various forms. Thank you for coming alongside and showing that you care for Reid, for our family, and for others.
In lieu of a live performance, may I share with you this YouTube video of Reid performing at the Crowne Plaza hotel last month. He sang "The Scientist" by Coldplay with his music therapist, Angela Neve to an audience of 500 people gathered for a Kick-Off dinner for the Walk. She had chosen this song arbitrarily and yet, with her innate intuition it became incredibly poignant. Before his cue, we endured fundraising rally speeches and several scientists expounding upon theories and research and ways money could be spent. Hearing his angelic voice in counterpoint to the real "scientists" showed us a glimpse of how God can use the "foolish" of this world to confound the wise.
Here are some of the lyrics:
Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh take me back to the start
I was just guessing at numbers and figures
Pulling the puzzles apart.
Questions of science, science and progress
Don't speak as loud as my heart.
Tell me you love me, and come back and haunt me,
Oh, when I rush to the start
Running in circles, chasing tails
coming back as we are.
I can't resist the Biblical truths that jump out of there. Will you indulge me and take from these some portion of the encouragement I get from you?
"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33
But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." I Samuel 16:7
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. James 1:1-3
Praise God He is the one who walks alongside us come rain, snow, sleet, or fire! (and never cancels.)

I found this blog post through a search of "The Scientist" and "autism". I'm so happy someone else sees the relevance of this song, even if it's not the original intent. I have 3 special needs kids, all on the spectrum, and this song is so perfectly fitting. I am definitely going to take a look around your blog as venturing into a Godly life is new for me.
